Etta James has passed away. She grew up in California. Like so many artists in the twentieth century, it was in Chicago where she transformed her talent into greatness. She belonged to Illinois for only a little while, but by the time she left here, her music already belonged to pop fans everywhere, forever.

She didn’t write many of her best songs. It didn’t matter. It’s impossible to imagine anyone else singing them.
